End of an Era II

Eight years of Springville High School Soccer have come to an end. First four for Joel (see http://beitemmett.blogspot.com/2019/05/last-game.html) and then four for Will.

Will was captain of the team this year. And although the Might Red Devils won 3 and lost 10 for the season, Will stood out as a major force on the team. He most often played as a mid-fielder, but that didn't stop him from working all ends of the field: 3 goals scored (perhaps the most of any player) at one end and goals blocked at the other. He really hustled.

SHS played a preseason tournament against teams from Davis County at North Ridge High in Layton. Two days were over cast and very cold and the third was sunny and cold.

I missed a few games that conflicted with Deer Valley work and of the games I attended, many were too cold for me to want to expose my fingers to photography. What follows are photos from the last few games of the season.

Loved the snowy back drop on our mountains (Maple Mountain here) throughout the season.

One of many tumbles. In one game, the artificial turf took a scrapping to one of Will's knees which required time off field to get the wound bandaged so no blood was flowing. In subsequent games the large scab would be torn off in play, resulting in more blood and more bandaging.

In the 3-2 win against Provo, Will scored two goals. Here he drives through defenders,

And then shoots in the goal that won the game.

As team captain (and because of his years of soccer experience at top levels), Will was encouraged by the coach to help with on and off field strategy and advising.

I loved the backdrop of Mt Timpanogos for the game against rival Maple Mountain. Here Will and longtime Storm team companion and friend Nate go up for a ball as high school rivals.

Nate and Will.

The Maple Mt. game ended in a 1-1 tie. Will hit the first penalty kick to bring Springville into the lead, but in the end Maple Mt won on extra kicks.

This intense drive on goal ended in an uncalled foul against Will that sent him tumbling.

Will protested and pulled a yellow card. In the next game the ref admitted to Will that he had miss-called that foul.

Cristian Garcia #17 is the other team captain. He and Will have played many years together with Utah Storm and at SHS.

Today was the final game of the season and thus senior day for the six seniors on the team. I took the photos, placed the order and installed the posters. Sadly it was a windy day which kept the posters swaying in the wind.

The starters. Wasatch High is the leading team in the state 4 A division.

Will played the whole game and never seemed to stop running.

Emmett and Tueller fans.

Springville High's old, bumpy, rutty, small soccer pitch along with its much nicer football field were torn up last summer in preparation for the construction of a new high school. This season the home pitch is a nice field at the junior high.

High flying shot on goal.

This free kick went in for a goal. Wasatch won 6-1.

One of several shots on goal that almost made it.

Senior signs blowing in the wind.

PK. Cristian taps it to Isaac.

Who shoots in Springville's only goal. Senior team work.

Two of Will's last drives.

Will and the rest of the team never gave up and never let down. Will's mom and dad are going to miss these games. Well played son.
